Mancha Blanca

Read Timanfaya before you go in

Mancha Blanca, in Tinajo, is where the national park explains itself, at a visitor centre on the Tinajo–Yaiza road. The village adds a chapel promised during the eruptions and a Saturday farmers’ market.

A little introduction

Get to know Mancha Blanca.

Mancha Blanca is a village in the municipality of Tinajo and gives its name to Timanfaya National Park's Visitor and Interpretation Centre, on the right-hand side of the road from Tinajo to Yaiza. The centre displays information and presents interpretative activities that prepare the visitor to understand and enjoy the park. It is a different place from the Montañas del Fuego entrance: there is no verified Intercity route to the Montañas del Fuego entrance, and the Volcano Route itself is travelled on the park's own bus after admission.

Why go

  1. The park, explained

The visitor and interpretation centre prepares you to understand Timanfaya before you see it.

  2. A chapel from the eruptions

The Ermita de los Dolores, built in 1781, keeps the island’s patron saint; beside it a cross marks where the lava changed course.

  3. Saturday market

Farm produce, cattle farming, sea produce and baked goods, every Saturday morning.

What to do in Mancha Blanca

  • Culture Don’t miss

    The visitor and interpretation centre

The centre gives free access to an exhibition and an audiovisual programme offering a complete overview of the park, in several languages; Turismo Lanzarote advises seeing it before starting a visit to the park.

  • Market Don’t miss

    Saturday agricultural market

Every Saturday morning the traditional agricultural market takes place in Mancha Blanca, with products of local farming and cattle raising, sea produce and baked goods.

  • Walk Don’t miss

    Volcanic walks nearby

Turismo Lanzarote lists the signposted Volcán del Cuervo trail, rated low difficulty, around the volcano and into its crater. It is not on any stop list this guide has read, so plan the way there and back separately.

  • Sight

The cross where the lava turned

Next to the chapel stands the cross that marks the point where the lava changed course.

    Caldera Blanca

The island’s largest crater, older than the 1730 eruptions, with a signposted low-difficulty trail to its rim. Not on a bus route this guide has read.

  • Culture

    The island’s fiesta in September

Every 15 September Lanzarote celebrates the Virgen de los Dolores, the island’s patron saint, whose image is kept in this chapel.

Good to know

Small details. Better days.

  • The centre is not the park entrance

A visit to Montañas del Fuego starts at the Taro de Entrada on the LZ-67, which no verified Intercity route reaches. Arrange that part of the day separately.

  • Book the guided Tremensana walk here

Turismo Lanzarote lists the Tremensana Route as a guided walk of some 2 km in the park that must be reserved in advance at the Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre.
