A little introduction

Get to know Puerto del Carmen.

Puerto del Carmen stretches along the south-east coast rather than gathering around one centre. Its character changes as you move between the sands of Los Pocillos, the broad resort frontage at Playa Grande, the smaller cove of Playa Chica and the old port. That length matters when arriving by bus: the official stop lists name hotel, shopping-centre and neighbourhood landmarks, and choosing one deliberately can save a substantial walk. Come for an easy beach day, add the seafront avenue on foot, then continue towards the old harbour when cafés and evening venues begin to wake up.

Make a day of it

What makes it worth the visit.

  1. Choose a beach for the day

Los Pocillos, Playa Grande and Playa Chica offer three distinct anchors along the resort coast. Pick one before boarding, then match it to the operator's named stops; treating all of Puerto del Carmen as a single destination can turn a relaxed arrival into a long exposed walk.

  2. Walk only the section of avenue you want

The seafront avenue links beaches, shops and places to eat over a long distance. A focused section between your beach and the next landmark is usually more rewarding than trying to cover the entire strip in midday heat.

  3. End around the old port

The old harbour and boatyard side gives the resort a different scale, with waterside dining and nightlife context beyond the main beach avenue. It is a natural final stop, but check your return point before settling in for the evening.

Getting to Puerto del Carmen

From the airport, line 161 serves Matagorda, Hotel Jameos, Costa Mar, Hotel San Antonio, Casino, C.C. Atlántico and C.C. Biosfera before continuing south. From Arrecife, use line 2 and compare the same style of landmark stops. Line 161 cannot be used for a journey wholly inside Puerto del Carmen.

Good to know

Small details. Better days.

Match the stop before you travel

Plot your accommodation or chosen beach against the operator's landmark list. Casino, C.C. Atlántico and C.C. Biosfera refer to different stretches of the resort.

Keep sea excursions separate

A boat tour's confirmed boarding or pickup instruction takes precedence over the public-bus stop you used to reach the resort. Allow walking and check-in time between them.

Before you settle in

Keep the way home in mind.

Use line 161 northbound for the airport or line 2 towards Arrecife, checking the official direction and current timetable. Save the precise stop nearest your final beach or the old port, and do not rely on line 161 for a local hop within the resort.
