Órzola is a small fishing village at Lanzarote’s northern tip, with the boats to La Graciosa at its quay. Give it a slow morning of its own, or use it as a careful handoff to the island across the strait.

A little introduction

Get to know Órzola.

Órzola sits at Lanzarote's far northern edge, a small white village between dark lava and the sea. Many visitors know it as the departure point for La Graciosa ferries, but it also works as a compact coastal pause: walk the harbour, look back towards the volcanic slopes and decide whether to explore nearby shores as a separately planned outing. The transport handoff needs discipline. Intercity line 9 and the passenger ferries have separate operators, tickets and timetables, so build in margin and never assume that a bus is timed to meet a boat.

A wild beach behind the village

La Cantería is golden sand, far from buildings, with strong waves: a place to walk rather than swim.

The harbour gives the clearest sense of Órzola's purpose, with local boats, ferry movement and views back towards the village. Stay aware of operational areas and use signed passenger access rather than treating the waterfront as an uninterrupted promenade.

Black rock, pale sand pockets and low white buildings make the north coast visually distinct from Lanzarote's resort strips. The official island map is a useful overview, while any walk to a nearby beach needs its own route, conditions and return assessment.

How do I get to Órzola by bus?

On Intercity line 9 from Arrecife; pick your departure from the board on this page. If a ferry is part of the day, check the ferry operator separately and allow a generous margin between the two.

Will the bus wait if my ferry back is late?

No. A delayed or changed sailing does not make the bus wait, so confirm the line 9 departure back to Arrecife before you leave the village or board a ferry, and keep time to spare.

In the water

Before you swim

La Cantería, behind the village, has strong waves and currents and the tourism board says swimming is not advisable; Caletón Blanco, the white-sand cove on the road south, was closed by Haría's council in September 2025 after a spill, until further notice, and this site has found no reopening. Órzola is a walk and a ferry, not a swim. Swim where a lifeguard is on duty and follow the signs and their instructions. The Canary health service gives the flags one meaning: green, bathing permitted; yellow, caution; red, bathing prohibited. Other flags and signs vary from beach to beach, so read the board at the entrance and ask the lifeguard. The island's safety consortium adds: do not go in under a red flag, in strong surf or undertow, or at a remote beach or one you do not know well enough; swim parallel to the shore and never leave children unwatched. If a current takes you, stay calm and do not swim against it. In an emergency call 112.

Keep two tickets and two plans

The public bus does not include the ferry. Store the bus timetable and ferry confirmation separately, with the boarding place and check-in requirement from the ferry operator.
Treat nearby beaches as onward trips

Do not assume line 9 drops at every north-coast beach. Research the walking route, surface, conditions and daylight before leaving Órzola, and preserve time for the bus back.
