Without a car

Where to stay on Lanzarote without a car

Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Famara or Haría: the bases compared by airport bus, beach and evenings, with no booking links.

Your bus, at a glance

For a bus holiday the base matters more than the hotel. Puerto del Carmen is the strongest beach base: airport line 161 to its door, lines 2 and 3 to Arrecife, and the tourism board places the island's evening life along its Avenida de las Playas and the old harbour, the Varadero. Playa Blanca is the calmer south: 161 from the airport, 60 and 62 to Arrecife, line 30 around the town, white-sand bays and the Fuerteventura ferry. Costa Teguise is the walkable family resort, one change on arrival day. Arrecife is the most connected and the least resort-like. Famara is the surf village and Haría the green valley, both lovely and both thin on buses. This page compares them and carries no booking link.

The practical part

The essentials

  1. Puerto del Carmen: the direct airport bus and the long strip

Line 161 runs from the terminals through Matagorda, Hotel Jameos and Costa Mar to the C.C. Biosfera, so you can be on a beach within the hour. Playa Grande, Playa Chica and Los Pocillos lie along it, four of them with Blue Flags. The tourism board names the Avenida and the Varadero harbour for pubs, live music and clubs. The catch is that line 161 does not carry trips wholly inside the resort, so hops along the strip are line 2 or 3.

  2. Playa Blanca: a calmer south with three ways to Arrecife

Lines 60 and 62 run to Arrecife all day every day on the dates read, line 161 to the airport, and line 30 circles the town from Faro Park to Las Coloradas via Flamingo, the Muelle, Playa Dorada and Marina Rubicón. The board says the evening gravitates to the seafront avenue. Flamingo and Dorada are calm white-sand bays; the ferries to Corralejo leave from the Muelle. A tourism accommodation sheet puts a supermarket a short walk from one of the hillside complexes, which is as specific as this site can be.

  3. Costa Teguise: walkable, with an airport change

The resort clusters around Las Cucharas, El Jablillo and Pueblo Marinero, where the board places the evening and Friday's market. Line 3 links it to Arrecife and on to Puerto del Carmen all day, with line 1 adding a few early and late trips to the capital; the airport means line 22 or 23 to Arrecife first. A late flight is the moment to weigh a taxi or a first night in the capital. A tourism accommodation sheet in the Jablillo area notes supermarkets and bars nearby.

  4. Arrecife, Famara and Haría

Arrecife has the airport on 22 and 23, every line out, the Charco de San Ginés and the marina for evenings, and El Reducto as a city beach; it is a working capital, not a resort, and its lines leave from two hubs, the station and the Intercambiador. Famara is a surf village on line 20, which printed weekday trips only, or line 31 from Costa Teguise. Haría is the green valley on line 7, which runs more often at weekends. Neither has a direct airport bus.

The comparison, line by line

Direct airport bus: Puerto del Carmen (161), Playa Blanca (161), Arrecife (22 or 23). One change: Costa Teguise (22 or 23, then 3), Famara (then 20 from Arrecife, or 31 from Costa Teguise), Haría (then 7). Calm beach at the door: Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Arrecife's El Reducto. Most lines through town: Arrecife. Ferry to Fuerteventura: Playa Blanca. Surf: Famara. Quiet and green: Haría.

Check the stop, not the resort name

Puerto del Carmen's stops run along the whole coast from Matagorda to the C.C. Biosfera, and Casino, C.C. Atlántico and Biosfera are different stretches of it; Playa Blanca's Estación and Muelle are different ends of town. Pick the hotel near the stop its destination page names, then check the walk yourself: this site has measured none of them.

Supermarkets, honestly

The tourism board's own accommodation sheets mention supermarkets nearby in parts of Los Pocillos, El Jablillo, the hills above Playa Blanca and central Arrecife. For Famara and Haría no source this site holds says anything about shops, so plan for that.

Questions people ask

Where should I stay in Lanzarote without a car?

Puerto del Carmen for the direct airport bus, the beach strip and the liveliest evenings; Playa Blanca for a calmer south with three lines to Arrecife and the ferry; Costa Teguise for a walkable family resort with one change on arrival; Arrecife for the most buses. Each destination page names the stop to use.

Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca without a car?

Puerto del Carmen if you want the shortest airport ride on 161 and the Avenida's evenings. Playa Blanca if you want it calmer, with Flamingo and Dorada, Marina Rubicón, the ferry to Fuerteventura and lines 60 and 62 to Arrecife all day. Both are real bus bases; the feel is the difference.

Can I stay in Costa Teguise without a car?

Yes. It is walkable around its beaches and Pueblo Marinero, line 3 runs all day to Arrecife and on to Puerto del Carmen, with line 1 adding a few early and late trips to the capital. The one cost is the airport change, 22 or 23 then 3, which a very late flight turns into a taxi or a first night in Arrecife.

Is Arrecife a good base for bus day trips?

The best-connected on the island: the airport on 22 and 23 and every line out, from the station platforms or the Intercambiador. It is also the least resort-like, a working capital with a lagoon, a city beach and the marina for evenings. Check which of the two hubs your line leaves from.

The other half of the plan

And the way back.

Book the first and last nights where the airport bus is direct if your flights are early or late: Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca or Arrecife. Then let the dated boards decide the days in between.
