The practical part
The essentials
The island's plate
Turismo Lanzarote names sancocho, local cheese, papas arrugadas with mojo and the sweet panes de maní and roscos de alma as the dishes to look for. Sancocho is salted fish, so it is not a vegetarian stew; a mojo is usually oil, garlic, pepper and vinegar, so ask what is in it rather than assume.
Wine: D.O. Lanzarote, grown in La Geria's ash
The designation is Denominación de Origen Vinos de Lanzarote; La Geria is its landscape, not a separate label, vines planted in pits dug through volcanic ash behind curved stone walls. The council's page puts Malvasía first among the island's grapes, then Listán Blanco, Moscatel, Diego and Burra Blanca, with Listán Negro the main red. The tourism board's wine itinerary names El Grifo, the oldest bodega in the Canaries, La Florida, Vega de Yuco and Finca Testeina, Rubicón, La Geria and Stratvs.

Markets: the weekly rhythm
Villa de Teguise's market fills the old town every Sunday morning with more than 400 stalls, and on Sundays line 11 runs from Costa Teguise's hotels straight to it and back (the Teguise page's board has its times); Puerto del Carmen's market is on Fridays at the Varadero; Costa Teguise's market at Pueblo Marinero is on Fridays, with a farmers' market on Tuesdays; Haría's traditional market is every Saturday; Arrecife's tourist and craft market every Saturday in the Plaza de Las Palmas. The days are published; this site does not repeat the hours.

Gluten-free: who to trust, and the gofio rule
FACE, the Spanish coeliac federation, runs FACE Restauración sin gluten, and its Canary member ASOCECA publishes its own recommended establishments: use those lists rather than a guess. The Canary health service's coeliac guide is blunt about gofio: wheat, barley and rye gofio contain gluten, and maize gofio (gofio de millo), which contains none, is contaminated by the traces left in a mill where other cereals are usually milled, so it may only be eaten if it was milled where no other cereal has ever been milled; the guide's list of gluten-free foods adds that a maize gofio must be on that list before you eat it.

Vegetarian and vegan: the phrases that matter
Say "soy vegano" or "soy vegana", then ask the question that decides the meal: "¿lleva carne, pescado, caldo animal, huevo, leche o miel?" (does it have meat, fish, animal stock, egg, milk or honey?). A potaje or a stew may sit on meat stock even when it looks like vegetables; sancocho is fish. For cheese, "¿el cuajo es animal o vegetal?" asks whether the rennet is animal or plant. These are this site's translations, not an official phrasebook.
Gluten-free: the cross-contamination question
"Soy celíaco" or "soy celíaca. Necesito comida sin gluten y sin contaminación cruzada. ¿Usan utensilios, superficies y aceite de freír separados?" asks for separate utensils, surfaces and frying oil. Ask about gofio, batter and bread crumbs by name; the health service's guide is the reference this site follows.

Bodegas by bus, with a caveat
Line 32 from Arrecife runs through San Bartolomé to Masdache and La Florida, which are villages in the wine country, and some of its trips skip La Florida and serve El Islote instead. The walk from any stop to a bodega door is unverified here, and line 32 is not yet on this site's dated boards; treat a bodega by bus as a candidate, not a plan.

Two menus near the bus, read closely
The Centres' own menus are restaurant pages this site can quote. At the Jardín de Cactus, on the Jardín de Cactus stop of lines 7 and 9, the menu lists the Cactus Burger, Heura nuggets (its footnote calls Heura a 100% plant-based soy protein), chickpea hummus with nopalitos, papas arrugadas with mojo, a salad and cactus maki. Its Ⓥ mark is labelled vegetarian in the page itself, yet it also sits beside the cheese dishes and the chorizo with avocado mojo, so it tells a vegan nothing and a vegetarian less than it seems; the vegetarian brunch has cheese, yogurt, a butter croissant and egg. Bread comes with or without gluten, and the page links an allergen sheet. At Islote de Fermina in Arrecife, one section is headed vegan and vegetarian, with an aubergine mille-feuille, without saying which dish is which; there is also a chickpea and beetroot hummus and papas with mojo, and the cafeteria offers white or gluten-free bread. Treat them as candidates to ask about, not as labels.

What to ask the kitchen
For the cactus burger: "¿La hamburguesa de cactus lleva queso, huevo, leche o mantequilla? ¿Y el pan y la salsa?" (does it have cheese, egg, milk or butter, and what about the bun and the sauce?). For a mixed vegan-and-vegetarian section: "¿Cuál de estos platos es vegano?" (which of these dishes is vegan?). For gluten-free bread: "¿Se tuesta en una tostadora aparte? ¿Se fríe algo sin gluten en aceite compartido?" (is it toasted in a separate toaster, and is anything gluten-free fried in shared oil?). A gluten-free item on a menu is an ingredient, not a promise about the kitchen; ASOCECA's restaurant project exists to train kitchens against cross-contact.

CELIGUIA, for coeliacs visiting Spain
FACE's app, CELIGUIA (formerly FACEMOVIL), lists gluten-free foods and the restaurants, hotels and shops with safe gluten-free options. It is for members of FACE's associations, but a visitor travelling to Spain can ask for temporary access by writing to [email protected]. Neither CACT menu claims a certification, and this site calls neither coeliac-safe: check CELIGUIA or ASOCECA's own list before you sit down.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask
What local food should I try on Lanzarote?
Papas arrugadas with mojo, sancocho, the local cheese and the sweet panes de maní and roscos de alma, with a glass of D.O. Lanzarote Malvasía from La Geria. That is the tourism board's own list, and it is short enough to finish.
Checked Turismo Lanzarote: Gastronomy and wines Gobierno de Canarias: Denominación de Origen Vinos de Lanzarote
Is Lanzarote good for vegans?
Papas arrugadas with mojo, salad and bread are the safe core everywhere, and the resorts have the widest menus. The question that decides the meal is whether a stew or a soup was made on meat or fish stock: "¿lleva carne, pescado, caldo animal, huevo, leche o miel?".
Can coeliacs eat safely on Lanzarote?
Yes, with the federation's tools: FACE Restauración sin gluten and ASOCECA's recommended establishments. Treat gofio as off-limits unless it is maize gofio from a mill where no other cereal has ever been milled and it is on the gluten-free food list, which is what the Canary health service's guide says, and ask about batter and cross-contamination in the Spanish this page gives you.

Which day is the market?
Villa de Teguise on Sunday morning, Puerto del Carmen's Varadero and Costa Teguise's Pueblo Marinero on Fridays, Haría and Arrecife on Saturdays, and a farmers' market at Pueblo Marinero on Tuesdays. The Teguise page on this site shows line 7's and line 9's dated departures for the Sunday.

Is the cactus burger at the Jardín de Cactus vegan?
The menu does not say. It marks the burger with the same Ⓥ it puts beside cheese dishes and a chorizo, and gives no vegan key. Ask about cheese, egg, milk and butter, and about the bun and the sauce, before you order; the Heura nuggets are the one item the menu describes as plant-based protein, and even there the batter and the dip are worth a question.

Is Islote de Fermina safe for coeliacs?
Its menu offers gluten-free bread, which is an ingredient, not a guarantee about toasters, surfaces and frying oil. This site does not call it coeliac-safe. Ask the cross-contact questions on this page, and check FACE's CELIGUIA app (visitors can ask for temporary access at [email protected]) or ASOCECA's list first.

The other half of the plan
And the way back.
A long lunch in Teguise or a bodega is the best reason to pick the bus back before you sit down. Market days are fixed; the Sunday line 7 and 9 departures from Teguise are on the Teguise page's board, dated, and they are a fact, not a feeling after dessert.
